A £1,000 prize pot is up for grabs on Sunday as the Great British Barber Bash returns to Big Penny Social in Walthamstow, with more than 1,000 attendees expected through the doors.

The one-day event pairs a main stage of international cutters demonstrating techniques on live models with competition battles including the fast fade and the Barber of the Year final. Competitors perform live cuts on stage in front of judges, competing for the top prize of up to £1,000.

Why did the organisers build the show?

Organiser Garry Spencer said the goal was straightforward: "We wanted to make a show that celebrated the industry, getting everyone together and enjoying the barber culture." He added: "We're going to have more than 1000 attendees so, you know, it's going to be busy."

For working barbers, that scale matters. A single-day event drawing four figures of trade attendees within London gives staff a low-cost training alternative to multi-day academies, with live demonstrations of cuts — devil pomp, burst taper, slick back — rather than pre-recorded tutorials.

Who is competing for the crown?

Jayden Nguyen, who moved to the UK in 2018, is one finalist to watch. A veteran of multiple hair award finals, he plans to lean on colour work to take the title. "I'm really confident [to win] this year," he said. Nguyen frames the competition as a chance to bring his Vietnamese creativity and attention to detail into the British scene.

His trajectory points to a practical lesson for salon owners: competitions of this kind give colour-trained stylists a public platform in a barbering format, a crossover that can open new service lines on a barbershop menu.

How do the judges keep it unpredictable?

The format deliberately tests adaptability. Alexander Colucci, a Birmingham-based judge, explained: "For the fast fade category, sometimes they just pick someone random for you on the day. You don't even know who you're going to cut." His tactical note on model selection: "You want someone good-looking with darker hair though. The detail shows up better that way."

That on-the-day model assignment rewards barbers who can read unfamiliar head shapes and hair textures quickly — the same skill that keeps a busy Saturday column profitable.

What keeps competitors coming back?

Community, according to returning attendee Jai-Li Rayneau of Milton Keynes: "I learnt so much from the bash, you get to meet so many inspirational people and it's a bit of fun."

Spencer positions inclusion as a core draw rather than a slogan. "We want all different types of barbers there," he said, "whether they're from Kurdistan, Turkey or more of an afro-style barber – there's a bit of something for everybody." For shops serving mixed clientele, the floor functions as informal CPD across texture specialisms many UK training routes still under-teach.

Sunday's Barber of the Year result — and whether Nguyen's colour strategy pays off against the fade specialists — is the next result to watch.
